Google working on Pixel Watch App dedicated to Pixel Watches

Google is gearing up for the arrival of its Pixel Watch, a connected watch that will be formalized in May 2022 and expected at the start of the school year. The product would benefit from some novelties, in particular, a dedicated application to provide additional services to the Wear OS application already present in Android. The watch could also unlock a smartphone, such as the Apple Watch with the iPhone.

May 11 kicked off the Google developer conference. This multi-day conference began with a traditional keynote address presented by the company’s chief executive Sundar Pichai. Many new features were announced during this keynote.

The next version of Android of course, but also hardware products. The Pixel 6a has, of course, been unveiled. The Pixel Buds Pro, Pixel Tab, Pixel 7, and 7 Pro were all shown. Just like the Pixel Watch, which everyone has been waiting for in 2021. It will finally arrive in 2022.

We know little about this watch other than its round design and compatibility with Wear OS 3 Indeed, like any self-respecting Pixel product, the smartwatch will deliver the latest version of the operating system offered by Google for its segment. Here Wear OS. Building on the strong heritage of Fitbit (part of the group), the Pixel Watch will be compatible with Android 8.0 (or more) and that’s it (no iOS). Wallet, Home, Maps, or even Assistant are installed by default.

Google is developing an app, dedicated for the Pixel Watch

For the rest, we have to put the rumors aside to find out a little more. We only know for a few days that the autonomy can be very reduced (one day) and that the charging can be quite slow. In addition, in a SoC from Samsung, we would find the Exynos 9110. Today, thanks to 9to5Google (again), we learn that the watch should work with a special application called Pixel Watch App.

This application should make it possible on the one hand to configure and update the watch, but also to install applications and link them with other applications. We are thinking, for example, of the Fitbit system for analyzing sports sessions, which also includes a premium component with fitness programs. 9to5Google draws a parallel between this application and that of Pixel Buds.

The Pixel Watch unlocks your Android smartphone

The existence of this application, which comes alongside the Wear OS app, was discovered by our colleagues by parsing the beta version of the Google Play Services application that was placed on the Play Store by the American company this week.

They discovered the mention of a new feature expected with the Pixel Watch: the unlock by the trusted device (just like the Apple Watch with the iPhone). To use this feature with the Pixel Watch, the user is prompted to open the Pixel Watch app on their smartphone. This confirms its imminent arrival, although Google may also postpone it, give up and change its mind by then.
