Google Working To Fix Chrome Battery Drain On macOS

Google is already worried about Chrome’s appetite it eats too much on even Windows, and Android. The company has already worked on Android and Windows to improve its performance. And Microsoft also fixed Chrome’s problem while running on Windows. The browser of the search engine giant is quite battery-hungry on the Mac as well. In the future, this should change through smaller and larger measures.

If you have a lot of tabs open in Chrome, you can quickly determine from the battery display in macOS that the Google browser is often battery number one. The company plans to at least mitigate this in the future with several measures.

Various new functions and changes are planned in upcoming versions, Google told the Wall Street Journal. As Max Christoff, director of browser engineering on the Chrome team said, this is an “ongoing investment in improvements in speed, performance and battery life”.

Tabs in the background

Among other things, Google plans to optimize the so-called tab throttling. Active tabs should be prioritized better and those should be frozen in the background. Resources still go completely unused here. For example, JavaScript time wake-ups will only be possible every minute for pages that are in the background. “Chrome performance is a journey, not a destination,” said Christoff.

Two hours more battery?

The tab throttling could already take hold in the upcoming Chrome version 86. According to internal Google experiments, 36 tabs are said to save up to two hours of battery life if no other applications are running.

Money still with advertising

Chrome should also be able to automatically suppress resource-intensive advertising in the future – whereby Google, where still the most money is made with advertising, should be in a conflict of objectives here. The first optimized versions can probably be expected in August. Apple had argued for its new Safari browser in macOS 11 Big Sur with various good benchmarks – the browser also has new integrated privacy functions.
