A few years back, Google began using its own Tensor chips in Pixel devices. Its 2024 device lineup will be powered by the Tensor G4, which, like its predecessors, is based on Samsung’s Exynos 2400 processor. The Exynos 2400 is already present in certain Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ models.
This is hardly shocking because Samsung Exynos chips served as the model for earlier Tensor chipsets. Interestingly, Google is not using Samsung’s CPU architecture this time around; instead, it is employing a bespoke CPU design.
The Tensor chipset is the outcome of Google and Samsung working closely together. The initial chip was utilized in the 2021 introduction of the Pixel 6 series. It shares the same CPU and GPU specifications as the Exynos 2100.
The following year, things slightly changed with the release of the Tensor G2, which was built on the Exynos 2200 and came with a specially made ARM-based GPU by Google. The Tensor G4 this year was anticipated to follow the same pattern as the Tensor G3, which had a similar story. That might not be the case, though, as evidenced by a recent chipset benchmark observation.
Unlike the Exynos 2400, which has a decacore CPU, it was observed to have an octacore CPU design, potentially indicating that Google has created a unique CPU layout specifically for their newest chip. This will be the first chipset in Google’s Tensor series to have a proprietary CPU if this claim proves to be true.
This indicates a significant step forward in Google’s quest to create its own semiconductor. Although the business has been using Samsung Foundry to produce them thus far, there have been rumors circulating that Google may switch to TSMC for the Tensor G5 next year.
