Graphics performance from the cloud: Microsoft GPU Cloud PCs launch

Microsoft has now announced the general availability of GPU-enabled Windows 365 Cloud PCs for the Enterprise and Frontline editions. These virtual Windows PCs were introduced in 2023.

Improvement for Cloud PCs

Windows 365 is a fully cloud-based service that offers virtual workspaces (Cloud PCs) that can be accessed from anywhere and on any device. Companies can deploy these in different configurations depending on their performance needs. However, until now there were a number of limitations when it came to using software that required higher GPU performance – this is now a thing of the past.

When introducing GPU-enabled cloud PCs, the Windows 365 team highlighted the benefits for businesses:

We’re excited to announce that GPU-enabled Cloud PCs are now generally available for Windows 365 Enterprise and Frontline editions. Users can now run advanced workloads that were traditionally limited by the constraints of local hardware in the cloud with increased speed and efficiency. Sensitive data and high-value digital assets can be processed and stored securely in the cloud, mitigating the risks associated with local storage. Microsoft Support

First introduced at Ignite 2023, the new GPU-enabled cloud PCs now support demanding workloads such as graphic design, image and video rendering, 3D modeling, and complex data processing. This new feature is now out of beta testing and available to all customers immediately. These available configurations are supported by NVIDIA and AMD GPUs. It is important to note, however, that the GPU-enabled cloud PCs are new standalone offerings; GPUs cannot be dynamically added or removed from existing cloud PCs.

Microsoft Frontline – Cloud PCs start in preview phase

There are still some limitations. The GPU-enabled cloud PCs come with the appropriate drivers pre-installed to ensure the best GPU performance. Other GPU drivers are not supported – so there is no way to customize or add anything yourself.

Microsoft Copilot

In addition, these PCs are compatible with AI features such as Microsoft Copilot. For the development of AI applications, Microsoft recommends the Windows 365 GPU Max configuration, which also supports the AI Toolkit for Visual Studio Code. Interested customers can order GPU-enabled cloud PCs directly via Windows365.com or through a Microsoft account manager.
