Gurman: The Capture Button on the iPhone 16 Will Be Used to Record Video

We have already encountered several rumors and renders about Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 series. Reportedly, the upcoming smartphones will feature a new Capture Button. Recently, Mark Gurman shared some fresh details about this button in his Power On newsletter. According to him, the button is capable of recording videos.

The prototypes of the iPhone 16 indicate that the Capture Button will reside on the bottom right side of the smartphone. Due to the inclusion of this button, the mmWave antenna on U.S. models of iPhones will be shifted to the left side of the device. It will be located just below the volume and Action buttons. The mmWave antenna on non-US versions does not need to be moved in order to make room for the capture button.

Interestingly, the new Capture Button will be a capacitive button with haptic feedback instead of a mechanical button. It might include a force sensor that could recognize pressure. From this perspective, it is mere speculation that the button might be activated through pressure that could turn on the camera for video recording. Reportedly, the new Capture Buton will be included in all four models of the iPhone 16 series. They will also feature support for spatial video and Vision Pro headsets. It is quite sensible that Apple would speed up and simplify the video recording process. Three-dimensional spatial videos captured with an iPhone can be played back on the Vision Pro headset.

Currently, spatial videos can be recorded with the help of the wide and ultra-wide cameras on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max that were added via the iOS 17.2 updates. On the other hand, the base model of the upcoming iPhone 16 series will feature a new vertical lens arrangement that will enable it to capture spatial video. In simple words, the spatial video feature won’t be limited to high-end models in the future. Do note that spatial videos are supported on the Vision Pro headset.
