Huawei Beats Samsung to become the leading Smartphone Vendor in the World

According to a new report from Canalys analyst firm, Huawei has shipped more smartphones globally over a quarter than any other company. It has been a long-standing goal of Huawei to become the leading smartphone seller in the world, and it has just happened. Huawei has beaten Samsung and become the biggest smartphone seller for the April-June period of 2020.

However, it does appear that one of the most influencing things in Huawei getting the top spot is the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. According to Canalys of 55.8 million Huawei smartphones shipped is down by 5% year-on-year. Similarly, Samsung shipments went down by 30% to 53.7 million.

The reason behind the difference in these drops is that 70% of Huawei phones are sold in China and China has recovered from the initial blow of COVID-19. However, the major markets in which Samsung phones are sold are still suffering from the pandemic.

Huawei in a statement said, “Our business has demonstrated exceptional resilience in these difficult times. Amidst a period of unprecedented global economic slowdown and challenges, we’ve continued to grow and further our leadership position by providing innovative products and experience to consumers.”

Canalys senior analyst Ben Stanton said, “This is a remarkable result that few people would have predicted a year ago. If it wasn’t for COVID-19, it wouldn’t have happened. Huawei has taken full advantage of the Chinese economic recovery to reignite its smartphone business.”
