The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei will shortly launch a new variant of its cheapest model in the P40 series, which is equipped with a 5G modem a competitive advantage for the company in the European market. The Huawei P40 Lite 5G then offers access to the new mobile networks at prices below 500 euros in Europe.
The Huawei P40 Lite 5G is basically a rededicated variant of the Huawei Nova 7 SE that has been available in China for some time. The device comes onto the market in Northern Europe and France, among others, which suggests that a market launch is also planned for Germany. It is to be offered in parallel with the Huawei P40 Lite, which was introduced in the run-up to the launch of the flagship smartphones of the P40 series.
The lower price of the Huawei P40 Lite 5G enables the use of the new Kirin 820 mid-range SoC from Huawei’s own development, in which the modem is integrated directly into the chip. The platform offers four ARM Cortex-A76 cores with a maximum of 2.36 gigahertz and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores that reach up to 1.8 gigahertz. An ARM Mali-G57MP6 graphics unit is also integrated. At least the Chinese original version has eight gigabytes of RAM and 128 GB of internal flash memory.
The Huawei P40 Lite 5G offers a 6.5-inch LCD panel that works with 2400×1080 pixels and does not need rounded corners. The front camera sits in a hole in the upper left corner of the panel and offers 16MP resolution and an f/2.0 aperture. Since it is an LTPS TFT display, the cut-out for the camera is a little larger than that of an OLED screen.
Huawei installs a comparatively high-resolution camera unit on the back of the P40 Lite 5G and Nova 7SE. The main camera offers a resolution of 64 megapixels with an f/1.8 aperture, and an ultra-wide-angle camera with eight megapixels and an f/2.4 aperture has also been integrated. There are also two 2MP sensors for macro shots and depth effects. As usual, there are various AI functions for which Huawei’s own neural processing unit is also used. A highlight of the Huawei P40 Lite 5G is the battery, which is not really impressive with its capacity of 4000mAh, but with its quick-charge function. Huawei offers even in this device, which is deeply located in the middle class, the possibility of filling the power storage with up to 40 watts and thus charging extremely quickly.
The operating system runs on the P40 Lite 5G Android 10 in conjunction with Huawei’s own EMUI 10. As is common with most really new Huawei smartphones, buyers must also be aware that this device without the official Google Mobile services and the usual Google apps like Gmail, Google Maps, and the like must get by.
Huawei will initially launch the P40 Lite 5G in Europe in the colors Crush Green, Space Silver, and Midnight Black. The price of the device will probably be less than 400 euros, although we have no reliable information yet.
