Huawei will start licensing its 5G technology to Apple and Samsung

Huawei is starting licensing its 5G technology to Apple and Samsung. The company is in initial phase of the process where it’s negotiating licensing rates for its 5G patents.

Huawei is a world-renowned company selling smartphones and other consumer electronics. It is also China’s richest technology company and the largest manufacturer of telecom equipment around the globe. Recently, the company faced trade bans from the US, but the company didn’t stop and leap forward to issue its 5G technology licensing to big companies like Apple and Samsung.

Huawei’s Chief Legal Officer Song Liuping recently announced that the company is in negotiating terms with Apple and Samsung for 5G patents. The company aims to collect between $1.2 billion to $1.3 billion in the form of licensing fees between 2019 and 2021.

It is also stated that the company is willing to charge lower licensing fees compared to its competitors including Nokia, Qualcomm, and Ericsson.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Jason Ding, who leads the intellectual property department at Huawei, said that Huawei intends to cap royalties to $2.50 per smartphone, which is only a small percentage of the $7.50 rate that Qualcomm currently charges Apple with. I

The company’s executives further said that the US Sanctions enforced by the Trump administration in May 2019 cannot stop the company from being paid for its intellectual property, even if the 5G infrastructure is developed by another company.
