Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo team up to challenge the Google Play Store

Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo are working on a new app store alliance as per a report from Reuters. The Global Developer Service Alliance (GDSA) will enable the developers outside of China to upload an app once and have it appear across all the four manufacturer’s app stores simultaneously.

This GDSA initiative aims to help the Chinese mobile tech giants challenge the dominance of Google Play Store. Also, it will provide the Chinese tech companies an easier alternative to expose their app to billions of users. The combined shipping of Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo accounted for almost 40% of all the smartphones in the 4th quarter of 2019.

This news has come up following the decline in hardware sales year over year and the mobile companies are considering generating more revenue by expanding into software and services. For example, Google collects 30% from sales on the Play Store to generate profits.

By making it easier for developers to increase their reach across different app stores, these Chinese tech giants want to attract more developers and more apps.

Primarily GDSA will benefit Huawei as it has also lost access to Google services, but Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo will also gain from this initiative.

According to VP of Mobility at Canalys Nicole Peng, it will provide these companies with “more negotiating power against Google.”

This alliance will allow these companies to leverage the others’ advantages in various regions as Xiaomi has a strong user base in India, Vivo and Oppo has a prominent presence in Southeast Asia and Huawei has in Europe.
