Huge leak shows unpublished content from 25 years

A massive leak shocks and inspires the Halo community: Almost 100 GB of historical material from a good 25 years of development history has surfaced. This includes unreleased content and a playable version of the legendary Macworld demo from 1999.

Treasures from a quarter century of Halo history

The Halo series is one of the most famous shooter franchises in gaming. Now an extensive data leak has emerged that provides deep insights into the development of the series. Nearly 100GB of material spanning more than 25 years of Halo history has been posted online, including previously unreleased content and early developer builds.

A playable version of the legendary Macworld demo from 1999 will be particularly interesting for fans. At that time, Halo was still planned as a third-person shooter for Macs. Then Microsoft took over the project and turned it into a launch title for the first Xbox. The leaked material now allows players to try out this very early version for themselves for the first time.

Collaboration with modders as the origin

Insider gaming reported, the leak is said to be due to a collaboration between 343 Industries (now renamed Halo Studios) and the modding group Digsite. The team worked to restore cut content from classic Halo games. The famous E3 2003 demo of Halo 2 was recently recreated for the Master Chief Collection. The leaked data dates back to 1998, when Bungie had just released Myth II: Soulblighter and was working on Oni and the first Halo. In addition to early developer versions, unpublished content and developer tools can also be found in the leaked material. Microsoft presents news about Halo and Halo Studios via video

Former Digsite team members confirmed the authenticity of the leak, but emphasized that they were not responsible for it. A former modder explained that many team members had recently left. He cited lack of pay and support from the studio as the reason, although the work on restored content such as the E3 demo was very successful.
