In the event of problems, iOS 26 restoration is now possible without a PC

With the new IOS 26 operating system, Apple brings a significant innovation for all compatible iPhones: the so-called “recovery assistant”. With this, recovery is possible for problems even without a Mac or PC.

New feature in the beta

The recovery assistant was first provided with the first beta version of iOS 26, but the Apple only officially mentioned the function now in the Release notes for the second beta version. Accordingly, the tool serves to analyze iPhones if they do not start properly and to automatically remedy possible errors. If an iPhone does not start under iOS 26 as usual, the system recognizes the problem and automatically puts the device into a new “recovery” mode.

The message then appears on the screen: “This iPhone came across a problem when starting. To help with the diagnosis and remedy, it was transferred to the restoration mode. Recovery will look for problems and try to fix them.”

Particularly practical: the restoration can be carried out with the help of a second Apple device, such as an iPad. Like a Reddit user reported the process can be started via a menu in the upper right screen area of ​​the affected iPhone. The second Apple device then leads the user step by step through the process to download a current iOS version and install it on the defective device.

iPhone 16 as a basis

The new function apparently builds on a recovery tool for iPhone-16 models introduced in 2024, but has now been made accessible to a wider device base. Apple reacts to the growing demand for uncomplicated and user -friendly solutions for troubleshooting – without any technical knowledge or additional hardware.

The recovery assistant could prove to be useful, especially in situations in which there is no access to a computer – for example when traveling. With this innovation, Apple significantly simplifies the recovery process and makes the iPhone even more independent of the classic desktop ecosystem.
