Intel: New Core i9 CPU for laptops faster than Apple’s M1 Max chip

It’s official: Intel has introduced the twelfth generation of core processors for laptops. You don’t hold back with performance promises and superlatives. The top model i9-12900HK is faster than Apple’s M1 Max, even the “fastest mobile CPU” ever.

The i9-12900HK aims to bring laptops back to the top

We had already reported on the first benchmarks and rumors last year, and now Intel is making it official. At CES 2022, the company unveiled its flagship processor for laptops alongside a host of other new products. The model i9-12900HK is sent into the race against the competition from Ryzen 9 5900HX and Apple’s current top model M1 Max in the Group’s marketing material – and according to Intel’s reading it can clearly prevail.

This statement is based on a diagram, the structure of which was unfortunately also copied from Apple: Unfortunately, more detailed information and grid lines are missing here. On the other hand, it can be clearly seen that the i9-12900HK can place itself well above the products from Apple and AMD in terms of performance. A look at the power consumption puts the ranking in a slightly different light: Intel’s chip wants to be able to beat the M1 Max from 35 watts, but Apple’s chip can be operated with significantly less voltage.

5 GHz, 20 threads 6 GHz WiFi

Aside from the competition comparison, Intel of course also provides specific performance data for the presentation. The latest i9 processor can clock up to 5 GHz and has 14 cores (6 performance and 8 efficiency) and 20 threads. Another important factor for future high-performance laptops: comprehensive memory support for DDR5 / LPDDR5 and DDR4 / LPDDR4 modules with up to 4800 MT / s. The latest flagship chip also wants to offer a lot in terms of connectivity. In a generation comparison, Intel speaks of “almost three times faster connectivity” for WLAN. This performance is thanks to the integrated Wi-Fi 6E module (Gig +), which supports dual-stream Wi-Fi in the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands. There is also Thunderbolt 4 support.
