Apple has been trying to reduce its dependence on Samsung for displays for years but is now facing a major setback. The Chinese company BEO would have adapted technology without consultation with Apple and the collaboration has come to a halt.
Last month, BEO proudly announced it was taking over the production of 30 million OLED displays for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro Max for Apple. As the Korean magazine The Elec reports, the American group has not yet given its final blessing for the order. The reason could certainly cause lingering problems: BEO was allegedly “caught” adjusting the circuit width of the iPhone 13 panels earlier this year, according to “people familiar with the matter”. “This was done without Apple’s approval, probably to increase revenue,” he said the Elec its sources.
Accordingly, BEO had sent its senior managers and other key personnel to Apple’s headquarters to answer questions about the unauthorized adjustment of the “circuit width of the transistors.” According to the current state of knowledge, it could already be too late for this measure, as Apple is currently considering simply stopping orders for OLED panels for the iPhone 14 series following the incident. During the visit to Cupertino, BEO tried to get a corresponding commitment but did not get a “clear answer” from Apple.
And so Apple seems doomed to order its 30 million OLED displays from its two largest partners, Samsung and LG if BOEs are eliminated. Samsung Display is currently expected to produce the 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch panels for the iPhone 14 Pro models, while LG Display is reportedly going to produce additional 6.7-inch panels for the top-end iPhone Deliver 14 Pro Max. . † It will be interesting to see how Apple solves this supply chain dilemma.
