Apple is said to be preparing an ultra-thin iPhone model for launch this year. New mockups now show how extremely slim the “iPhone 17 Air” could be – with a thickness of just 5.5 millimeters, it would be the thinnest iPhone of all time.
Rumors about a new iPhone model called iPhone Air have been around for a while, but they are becoming more and more concrete. Apple is apparently about to revolutionize the smartphone world with an ultra-thin iPhone model.
The so-called “iPhone 17 Air” is scheduled to come onto the market in 2025 and will be impressively slim. New mockups now give a taste of what could be the thinnest iPhone ever. According to information from renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 17 Air “could measure just 5.5 millimeters at its thinnest point.”
For comparison: The currently thinnest iPhone model, the iPhone 6 from 2014, is 6.9 mm thick. The new model would be “about 30 percent thinner than the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, and about 33 percent thinner than the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.”
That seems an extreme value – can Apple actually save almost a third of the thickness? MacRumors has now published mockups that illustrate how thin the iPhone could actually be. The pictures show an extremely slim device that almost seems to be reaching the limits of what is technically possible.
With its thinness, the iPhone 17 Air even approaches the current 13-inch iPad Pro, which at 5.1 millimeters is currently Apple’s thinnest device.

However, the extreme slimness of the device also brings with it technical challenges. We have already highlighted these. To make the thin design possible, Apple will probably have to make some compromises. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to only have a single 48-megapixel camera on the back. There could also be limitations in terms of battery capacity and speakers.
Despite these possible compromises, Apple apparently plans to position the iPhone 17 Air as a high-quality device, i.e. not part of the SE line, under which Apple offers the cheaper iPhones. It is intended to replace the iPhone 17 Plus and be offered alongside the standard iPhone 17 and the Pro models. With a 6.6-inch display, 8GB of RAM and a 5G modem developed by Apple, it could still be attractive to many users.
