WhatsApp was recently fined by Ireland for breaking data protection rules. The fine amount was €225 million.
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) fined WhatsApp as it failed to provide data protection information to users. The company failed to meet transparency obligations.
It is the largest fine DPC has ever imposed and the second-largest for an organization under the EU’s data protection laws.
The company failed to process user data in a lawful and clear manner. The company also failed to process how it collects users’ data. The company also did not disclose where the users’ data was stored.
It all started back in 2018. The DPC was later instructed to reassess and revise the fine it intends to impose on WhatsApp.
On the other hand, WhatsApp says the fine is, “entirely disproportionate” and is going to appeal.
