It’s possible that one UI 6.0 lacks screen burn-in prevention

The South Korean conglomerate Samsung is busy rolling out the Android 14-based One UI 6.0 updates to its high-end and mid-range smartphones. The new UI comes with various new features and design modifications. However, there is one element that is missing from the latest updates. We are talking about screen burn-in protection.

One UI 6.0 may not have screen burn-in prevention for components in the status bar

Some users claim that the new update lacks the screen burn-in protection feature. The devices that are based on OLED panels might present problems with long-term image retention. A built-in feature of all recent phones with OLED panels is to subtly shift the pixels of specific UI elements so that the same image isn’t repeatedly displayed on the same set of pixels. For reference, the status bar and navigation bar elements move slightly to prevent screen burn-in on a device running One UI 5. Whereas the status bar elements remain unchanged, while the navigation bar elements move aside on a device based on One UI 6.

What does screen burn-in mean for OLED panels?

A screen burn-in happens when the position of the status bar and navigation elements doesn’t change on an OLED screen. It is basically a limitation presented with OLED panels that results from featuring the same images or UI elements for longer. As a result, the organic material of pixels decays and causes problems like image retention, patches, and others.

A common practice to avoid this problem is pixel shifting. The company has been using this approach since the release of the Galaxy S3 but it seems to be unavailable on devices based on One UI 6. More specifically, the feature is missing for the status bar elements. It is anticipated that the company will soon resolve this issue and roll out an update for devices based on One UI 6.
