Japan Olympic organizers are planning to use facial recognition to manage guests

It is very difficult to confirm the identity of the hundreds of thousands of the athletes, journalists, and officials who will be attending the 2020 Olympics in Japan.

The Japan Times reports that the organizing committee of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics stated that organizers are planning to implement facial recognition technology to confirm the identity within no time. There will be almost 300,000 to 400,000 attendees and the facial recognition technology wouldn’t be used on the spectators because the officials are concerned that the ID sharing or theft will make the “Games” insecure.

The facial recognition technology was tested to manage journalists coming and going from the visitor center at the Japan House during the 2016 Olympics. NEC Corp is to be the developer of the program including other NEC customers CaliBurger, Chicago police, Georgia and the Department of Homeland Security.

The implementation of the technology hasn’t been officially announced and therefore the people’s concerns about the use of this technology have not been addressed yet.

The Tokyo Olympics will take place between July 24th and August 9th of 2020.
