Later this year, Huawei will release a smartphone with a 5G connection

We all know about the tension between China and the US. Previously, back in May 2019, the United States Department of Commerce added Huawei to the entity list. It’s been four years now that Huawei is combating the US government sanctions. Followed by this decision, companies in the United States were banned from selling hardware and software to Huawei. In this way, the Chinese company Huawei was restricted from gaining access to 5G chipsets.

As of now, we have come across some new information shared by Reuters. According to this information, With the help of China’s Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), Huawei may at last resume using 5G chipsets. This information is further supported by pieces of evidence provided by three third-party research corporations associated with the Chinese smartphone market. According to these sources, Huawei and SMIC are collaboratively working on the development of 5G chipsets.

Notably, the 5G chipsets are based on the N+1 manufacturing process of SNIC. On the other hand, Huawei is providing electronic design automation (EDA) software tools for the chips. Although SMIC’s manufacturing technology is not really fabbed on a 7nm process, previous reports indicate that it is equivalent to competitors’ 7nm process technologies in terms of power and stability.

It is believed that the yield rate for these chips will be as low as 50%. The predictions also point to 2 to 4 million 5G chipset units, with potential growth to 10 million units later on. It is expected that the first Huawei smartphone featuring the newly developed 5G chipset will launch later this year. Furthermore, previously we also learned that Huawei could get access to Qualcomm’s 5G chipsets.
