It is well known that medical devices are susceptible to magnetic interference. In January, Apple issued a warning for the iPhone 12 and its strong magnets, and now they are providing a complete list of devices that should be used with caution.
Apple’s MagSafe and the iPhone 12 have brought the problem of unwanted interactions between consumer electronics and medical devices back into focus – even if Apple asserts that the new model behaves like its predecessor. As we were able to report under the heading, Apple had added clear warnings to its support documents after an investigation by the Heart Rhythm Journal. Now the document ” Information on possible magnetic interference from medical devices ” has been adapted again. Apple provides a full list of devices (at the end of this article for your convenience) that are advised to be careful around medical products.
The company sticks to its general explanations and recommendations, which of course also apply to devices from other manufacturers. The sensors in cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators can therefore react to “magnets and radio units” when there is very close contact. The recommended safe distance for Apple products is “more than 15 cm”, while wireless charging should even be “at least 30 cm”, according to the company. At this point, a piece of advice follows, which is of course also generally applicable: If users suspect that a product is affecting their medical device, the following applies: stop using it immediately, contact a doctor and manufacturer.
As Apple emphasizes, the list only includes products in which the magnets used are of a strength that interferes with medical devices cannot be ruled out. “Certain other Apple products contain magnets that are unlikely to interfere with medical devices,” the company said.
According to Apple, these products should be kept at a safe distance from medical devices
