Earlier this month, MediaTek launched the Dimensity 1000 Plus chipset, a moderately upgraded version of its 5G flagship Dimensity 1000 processor. Now, the company did the same for the Dimensity 800, as it launches the Dimensity 820.

The newly announced 7 nm chipset is however a bigger upgrade over the 800 Dimensity than the Dimensity 1000 Plus has been over the Dimensity 1000. We still see the same octa-core layout here, starting with the CPU (4x Cortex-A76 and 4x Cortex-A55), but the heavyweight cores have been upgraded from 2Ghz to 2.6Ghz. In fact, the Taiwanese company claims better multi-core performance than “others” up to 37 percent.
This wouldn’t be a surprise, as rival chipsets tend to offer only two heavyweight cores in the upper mid-range tier.
The new MediaTek chip also sees a graphical upgrade, from a Mali-G57 GPU four-core to five cores. The chipmaker says you should expect 33 percent better gaming performance than “direct alternatives.” Presumably the “alternatives” and “other” references are comparisons to the Snapdragon 700 series of Qualcomm’s. Android Authority has asked the firm to confirm those statements.

Also, the chip designer brings to the table a few 5G-related features, such as 5G+5G dual SIM (seen on its flagship silicon), 2CC carrier aggregation, and 5 G UltraSave tech for more efficient connection.
As far as photo and video are concerned, you can expect 32MP+16MP dual cameras, 80MP single cameras, up to four simultaneous cameras and 4 K HDR multiframe recording.
Other details include the company’s machine learning tech APU 3.0, 120Hz support (similar to the Dimensity 800), and sub-6Ghz 5G.
There’s no word on when we can expect the first Dimensity 820-equipped phones, but recent leaks point to an upcoming Redmi phone loaded with the chipset.
