Microsoft Admits That Xbox Has Lost Console War With Sony

The struggle for the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft is entering a new round today, which means that more and more interesting details and news are coming to the public. Microsoft, for example, announced today that it has “lost the console wars”.

Because the hearings surrounding the lawsuit recently launched by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) against Microsoft against the acquisition of Activision Blizzard begin today, the parties involved have submitted a series of new documents that reveal various details that the companies would otherwise prefer to keep silent about would.

For example, an excerpt from one of Microsoft’s documents, quoted by The Verge, states that “Xbox has lost the console wars” and the competition is well placed to remain dominant by leveraging exclusive content. Microsoft has thus for the first time publicly and officially admitted that it could not keep up with the Sony PlayStation and Nintendo.

Couldn’t outperform Sony and Nintendo

Microsoft is trying to prove with its argument that in the struggle for supremacy in game consoles, it has always been at a disadvantage. Since 2001, when the first Xbox came onto the market, it has been said that the established provider’s Sony and Nintendo have not been able to outperform. This has not changed in more than 20 years after the launch of the first Xbox generation.

Sony, on the other hand, has been the dominant provider of game consoles for more than two decades, and nothing has changed in the course of the five device generations that have been released so far. The Xbox was consistently in third place, although in 2021, for example, it only had a global share of around 16 percent in the number of game consoles sold. According to its own statements, Microsoft also lags behind with the “Installed Base” with a share of 21 percent.
