Microsoft Confirms Vista Start Sound in Windows 11 Was Just a Bug

Whether bug or reminiscence – the Windows Vista sound is currently fighting for his comeback. Microsoft accidentally has the old start sound in Windows 11-insider-Build, which causes some irritation with every restart.

Greetings from Vista

This is now a bug with a nostalgic aftertaste that Microsoft apparently does not get rid of everything: In the current Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27898, users experience an acoustic journey through time. Instead of the usual starting tone, the characteristic sound of Windows Vista suddenly sounds when I drive up-the typical four-second sound, which awakens memories of 2006.

Vista jingle as a breakdown, not as a feature

At first the phenomenon caused speculation, because a few weeks ago there was a sudden comeback of the old pover. But the company quickly clarified.

Brandon Leblanc, Senior Program Manager in the Windows Insider Team, confirmed on the platform X: The Vista sound is simply “an actually real bug”. Then it became “calm” in the truest sense, but with the new Windows 11-Build, which was published after the patch-day July, the Vista startup sound is back (via Neowin). Microsoft included the mistake in the list of known problems. Also the Blog post was added later.

The weekly Canary Channel flight contains a nice surprise from the past and plays the Windows Vista-Boat sound instead of the Windows 11-boat sound. The error should be fixed in one of the next Canary Channel flights. Amanda Langowski

A sound with history

The iconic start sound was composed by the British musician Robert Fripp at the time-known as a guitarist and founding member of the prog rock band King Crimson. A short but striking sound was created in a stay in the studio with Microsoft and producer Tucker Martine, which was used in Vista and Windows 7. The fact that this sound accidentally appears in Windows 11 is likely to trigger nostalgic feelings for some users.

Does the sound stay? Only if you want

For fans of Vista-Jingles, the little bug may even be a feature. If you want to activate the sound permanently, you can continue to do so in the future-with the original WAV file and some adaptation in the Windows sound settings and the registry.
