Microsoft Ditches Office Support For Chromebooks

Google’s Chrome OS is particularly popular in the USA, and Chromebooks are particularly popular in schools and students. Anyone who wants to use the Microsoft Office suite on such a device will have to use the web version of the application in the future.

Anyone who buys a Chromebook should or must know that they are consciously opting for the “ecosystem” of Google. This means that the data is closely linked to Google or Drive and that word and table processing also runs on it. There are certainly some who prefer to use Office, but the options for them will soon be limited.

Because Microsoft has confirmed to about Chromebooks that Chrome OS support for the Android app from Office will be discontinued in a good three weeks. This can currently still be used regularly, but from September 18, users will have to access the Office web app. The one through the Google Play Store The available version will no longer be available on Chrome OS from this point in time.

Office Apps Wont Work Offline

This means that the Microsoft-inclined Chromebook owners will have to add the pages Office.com and Outlook.com to their bookmarks, where they will hopefully find all the functionalities they need. By the way, that doesn’t mean the Office apps for Android will disappear – they just won’t work on Chromebooks anymore. In practice, this means that offline use will no longer be possible – Chrome OS users will, however, be used to connecting to the Internet in order to work with it.

Microsoft’s official statement: “In an effort to offer Chrome OS / Chromebook customers the best possible experience, Microsoft applications (Office and Outlook) will be switched to web applications (Office.com and Outlook.com) on September 18, 2021. This Transition will give users access to additional, high-quality features. Customers will need to sign in with their personal Microsoft account or an account that is linked to their Microsoft 365 subscription.”
