Microsoft Edge Brings Back RSS Feed Link Feature

Microsoft is bringing back a practical function that is reminiscent of a classic RSS feed reader. The Edge browser now has the option to “follow websites” in a preliminary version for testing.

Google has also developed something similar for Chromium, and now Microsoft is following with Edge. Actually, you have to say that Microsoft is trying again because a few months ago there was a test built-in function in Edge Canary. In the new Edge Canary builds for Windows, Microsoft has now started testing a new feed that introduces native RSS functionality with the integration of collections.

Platforms such as Google News or Microsoft News have basically sold the classic RSS aggregation tools, but with the Edge function, you can easily keep an eye on your own news feed again.

Subscribing to an RSS feed returns you to the browser; there is no need to resort to RSS readers or web applications like Feedly. Microsoft’s implementation of the RSS read function is called “Followable Web” and is currently only being launched for selected users with Edge Canary build. The flag to enable this experimental feature appeared nearly three months ago and was reintroduced with the latest update as part of the company’s controlled beta testing.

“Followable Web” / “Follow Websites”

As the name suggests, Followable Web gives you access to a curated feed of all your favorite websites from a Collections button on Edge’s toolbar. It’s housed in the Collections panel, and articles published by publications appear in a neat feed when you open the browser.

The function of the Edge RSS feed reader is still at the very beginning of development. The appearance of the feed and the option to view and save new feeds will be revised in the coming weeks. When, or rather, whether the function will soon make it into a final Edge version for all users is not yet known.
