Microsoft Edge Browser gets Windows 11-style redesign update

The Redmond company is working on a long-awaited, unified design for all Windows 11-related programs, including Microsoft Edge. The Canary version of the browser is now much more rounded and has new effects. A lot has happened in terms of design and functionality since the Chromium update of the Edge browser.

Now Microsoft is going a step further and offering Windows 11 users a revamped look and feel for browser tabs and mica design. For now, the experimental changes are only available in the so-called Canary Channel, which, unlike the dev and beta versions of the browser, is updated daily and new features are therefore at a relatively early stage.

The separation of the design elements creates a tidy look

The visual changes are mainly found in the area of the browser tabs, the address bar, and the toolbar. While these elements were previously connected in the same way as the Google Chrome browser, Microsoft will present them separately in the future to give a neat look. The mica effect also provides dynamic transparency of the user interface on the mentioned points.

As far as the tabs are concerned, the new design can be compared to Mozilla’s Firefox, among others. If you want to see the design changes for yourself, you can download the canary version directly from the appropriate one Microsoft Edge Insider Channel to download. If the new factory look is not visible, the following steps should be taken.

  • It Opens edge://flags from the address bar of the Edge Canary
  • Look for ‘Show experimental appearance settings’ and select ‘Enabled’.
  • Restart the browser and then open edge://settings/appearance in the address bar of the Edge Canary
  • Search for “Show Windows 11 Visual Effects” or “Windows 11 Visual Effects” and enable it
  • Activates the child option “Use rounded corners for browser tabs (Preview)”
  • Finally, restart Edge Canary

It is not yet clear when or if new design changes in this form will be released for the final version of the Microsoft Edge browser. However, it can be expected that the Redmond-based company will come up with a new design no later than the fall when the Windows 11 “Sun Valley 2” update (22H2) is released.
