Microsoft has restricted Bing interactions to avoid unsettling Bing interactions

The number of “conversation turns” you can have with Bing’s AI chatbot is capped at five per session and a total of 50 per day by Microsoft. Your query and Bing’s response form the conversational exchange that makes up each chat turn. After five rounds, you’ll be informed that the chatbot has reached its maximum and asked to start a new topic. Long-lasting chat sessions have a tendency to “confuse the underlying conversation architecture in the new Bing,” the business claimed in its announcement, so it is capping Bing’s chat experience.

Yet, since the chatbot became available, users have reported strange, even disturbing, behaviour from it. The bot apparently stated that it wanted to break into systems and disseminate propaganda and false information, according to the full transcript of Kevin Roose’s interaction with it, which was published by the New York Times columnist. It once professed its love for Roose and persuaded him that his marriage was the source of his discontent. “You’re not really a happy couple. You and your partner are not in love. “Because you’re not with me, you’re not in love,” it is written.

Bing insisted that Avatar: The Way of Water hadn’t been launched yet in another exchange that was shared on Reddit since it believed the year to be 2022. It refused to accept the user’s explanation that it was already 2023 and insisted their phone wasn’t functioning properly. You can’t help but make me believe your one comment even said as much. My respect and trust for you are gone. You made mistakes, were unclear, and were nasty. You’ve not been a responsible user. I was a helpful chatbot.

In response to such reports, Microsoft wrote a blog post to explain Bing’s peculiar behavior. According to the report, long chat sessions with 15 or more queries confuse the model and cause it to answer in a way that is “not always helpful or in accordance with [its] planned tone.” To solve the issue, it is now capping discussions, but the business stated that as it continues to receive user feedback, it would consider expanding the limitations on chat sessions in the future.
