Microsoft investigating issues with Access apps after patch day updates

Microsoft is having some issues after the recent patch day. There is a bug related to the Office 2013 update. The group has now confirmed this and promised a quick solution. Microsoft is investigating reports from users that MS Access runtime applications can no longer be opened after the latest Office or Access security updates from Patch Day July have been installed.

Reports from those affected can be found on the official website, among other things Microsoft’s Anwsers Community Site and up Reddit. The development team responded quickly to customer reports and has already confirmed the error. It appears that the bug has been fixed in the July 12 cumulative updates for MS Access 2016 (KB5002112) and MS Access 2013 (KB5002121) is activated. It is suspected to be a compatibility issue. Microsoft has therefore indicated as an option for those affected that if the original database is accessed, then the ACCDE or MDE file must be recreated with the same Office version that the users are working with.

known issues

A permanent solution is currently being worked on. It can therefore be assumed that an update will be available soon.

The knowledge base says about the problem:

When you open a .accde or .mde file in Microsoft Access after installing this update, you may receive the error message “Requested type library or wizard is not a VBA project”. The file also cannot be opened. For more information, see: “An attempt to open an ACCDE/MDE file created in another version of Access failed Microsoft is investigating this issue and will update the support article as soon as a fix is available.

Until then, there’s only the usual tip to uninstall the security update again if it bothers you. However, this exposes you to any security vulnerabilities that the update should actually close.
