Microsoft Pulls Plug on Windows 11 SE: School Edition Support Ends October 2026

With Windows 11 SE, Microsoft wanted to create its own cheaper alternative to Google’s browser-based operating system Chromeos a few years ago. Now the version of Windows 11 designed for the education sector can be released at short notice.

Support for ‘Schüler-Windows’ ends in October 2026

Like the colleagues of Neowin have noticed, Microsoft has one Support article updated for Windows 11 SE, in which you can now read that the “school version” of Windows 11 should no longer be supported from next year. Specifically, October 2026 is called an appointment for the end of support. According to the support article, there will be no further software updates, no further security updates and no more technical support for Windows 11 SE. It is surprising how radically Microsoft seems to act when the support for Windows 11 SE is set, the periods are usually considerably longer for Windows variants that are used more frequently.

Schools stay on non -supported hardware

The problem is that educational institutions that have invested in the purchase of laptops or other devices with Windows 11 SE so that they remain on hardware that is no longer supported. At least it would be conceivable that, depending on the equipment, individual models could be switched to a “normal” version of Windows 11 or alternative operating systems. Windows 11 SE was never offered through regular sales channels from Microsoft, but was only available for educational institutions.

With Acer, Asus, Dell, Dynabook, Fujitsu, Lenovo and HP, all large PC manufacturers had started with their own laptops or convertibles based on Windows 11 SE. With the Surface Laptop SE, Microsoft himself launched its own small notebook for students with Windows 11 SE in 2021. Windows 11 SE, with a largely based use on Progressive Web Apps (PWA), should use a concept similar to Chromebooks with Chromeos. The sales figures for Chromebooks have been steadily falling since 2022, which means that Microsoft no longer sees a reason to offer its own competitive product.
