Microsoft rebranding Xbox Live to the Xbox network

Microsoft is making some changed and rebranding Xbox Live to the Xbox network. The new branding has started showing its appearance in the Xbox dashboard for beta testers. Instead of Xbox Live, “Xbox network” is displayed on the dashboard. The company has confirmed the name change.

In a statement to The Verge, a Microsoft spokesperson said:

’Xbox network’ refers to the underlying Xbox online service, which was updated in the Microsoft Services Agreement,

The update from ‘Xbox Live’ to ‘Xbox network’ is intended to distinguish the underlying service from Xbox Live Gold memberships.

The company has been using Xbox Live to call its underlying Xbox service since its original launch 18 years ago. Previously, Larry Hryb was known as “Xbox Live’s Major Nelson” for years, but now he refers to himself as “Xbox’s Major Nelson.”

Information about name change first appeared back in August 2020, after Microsoft updated its Services Agreement. The company said it wasn’t rebranding the service, nor did it plan to discontinue Xbox Live Gold. Rather, the company increased the price for Xbox Live Gold which the company soon reversed.

The company is also planning to reduce the subscription requirement for free-to-play games on its Xbox network in the coming periods.
