Microsoft Silently ended Xbox One Production in 2020

Microsoft has confirmed that not a single Xbox One console has rolled off the production line for more than a year. In favor of the Xbox Series X and Series S, not only two models, but the entire One series were discontinued. Sony, on the other hand, continues to produce the Playstation 4.

“In order to focus on the production of the Xbox Series X / S, we have stopped production of all Xbox One consoles by the end of 2020,” said Cindy Walker, Senior Director of Xbox Console Product Marketing , opposite the colleagues from The Verge. Since then, all models of the older series have been online and on sale at local dealers. Most recently, in the summer of 2020, the Redmond-based company announced that the Xbox One family would remain and announced a production stop for the Xbox One X and the digital edition of the Xbox One S.

Sony PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch Thrive

Sony, on the other hand, only confirmed a few days ago that production of the PlayStation 4 was being extended, although the schedule said it would be discontinued at the end of 2021. The Japanese company plans to continue to produce at least one million PS4 consoles, with the option of increasing the quota depending on demand.

This should not only cushion the high demand for PlayStation systems in general and keep their entry-level price low, the developers should also be given more time to work on exclusive PS5 titles. The Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 are constantly sold out in this country and the PlayStation 4 is sometimes only available at exorbitant prices.

Only Microsoft and Nintendo manage to meet the demand for older and comparatively less powerful consoles with the Xbox Series S and the Switch. The fact that players put good exclusive titles above pure performance is shown, among other things, by the steadily increasing sales of Nintendo systems. An improvement in “next gen” availability is currently not foreseeable.
