Microsoft Update adds new account manager to the start menu

Microsoft has released another preview update for Windows 10, KB5045594. The non-security-related update improves the account manager in the start menu, which was previously unpopular with users, and fixes some errors.

Outlook for the next patch day

In preparation for the November Patch Day, a new release preview for Windows 10 22H2 is now available for download. This will increase the OS version to 19045.5073. Among the “highlights” of the new version of the operating system is the adjustment of the account manager in the Windows start menu. With the current update, the function that has been widely criticized by users is being adjusted again.

Above all, the fact that elementary functions such as logging out and the button for changing users were hidden in an additional submenu to make room for advertising angered many people. Microsoft’s current withdrawal was already announced in an insider release at the end of August. Now you can at least log out again without any detours.

More corrections

The update also contains a number of bug fixes. For example, problems with multifunction printers that occurred when connecting the devices using a USB cable are resolved. Other fixes included in KB5045594 include:

• A race condition causes error 0x3B. This may occur when you upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11.
• WebView2 apps do not recognize input from Xbox 360 and Bluetooth controllers.
• You may see a black screen when you sign in to Azure Virtual Desktop. It may also happen that you are unable to log out of your account. The black screen remains even if you disconnect and reconnect to AVD. Event ID:1000 appears in the application event log, which indicates an error in svchost.exe_AppXSvc.

Installing the update

If you want to install the preview update, you can download it under Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update. Since this is a preview, it will not be distributed to all users at the same time. For some users it may take some time until KB5045594 is found. Alternatively, Microsoft also provides the update as usual in its Update catalog available as an .msu file. The package can be downloaded directly there by anyone interested.
