Microsoft has issued a warning that its January 2025 Windows updates might fail to install on devices running version 2411 of Citrix’s Session Recording Agent. This compatibility issue, affecting both Windows 10 and Windows 11, has raised concerns among organizations reliant on Citrix software.
When attempting to apply the updates, users may see an error message stating, “Something didn’t go as planned. No need to worry – undoing changes.” Essentially, the updates download and apply but fail to complete installation due to the conflict.
According to Microsoft, the issue arises specifically from certain Citrix components, particularly the Session Recording Agent introduced in version 2411, released in November 2024. The incompatibility prevents some driver files from being updated properly during the installation process of the January security patch.
Citrix has confirmed awareness of the issue and is actively investigating alongside Microsoft to identify a permanent fix. Both companies have highlighted that this is not expected to impact home users, and only organizations using version 2411 of the software may experience these problems.
For now, Citrix has provided a simple workaround to allow users to install the Windows updates successfully. To do this, users need to temporarily stop the Session Recording Agent client and disable its startup type. Once the application is closed, the Patch Tuesday update should install without issues, after which the Citrix software can be reopened.
Additionally, Citrix has shared detailed instructions for applying the workaround using either PowerShell or Command Prompt for administrators managing larger deployment environments.
This situation underscores the risks of compatibility issues when rolling out updates on enterprise systems dependent on third-party software. While Citrix and Microsoft work toward a long-term solution, users should keep an eye on further announcements from both companies.
For now, taking proactive measures to disable the Citrix application before updating Windows ensures organizations can stay secure while Microsoft and Citrix continue their investigation. Regularly monitoring for updates remains critical to minimize vulnerabilities and ensure smooth system operations.
Both companies are expected to release updates to address the issue once a resolution is found.
