Microsoft warns of risks from the end of support from Office 2016/2019

Office 2016 and 2019 will soon no longer be supplied with security updates. From October 2025, millions of users run the risk of using unprotected software. This could have significant consequences, especially for companies.

The end of support for office versions is closer

In exactly six months, support for Microsoft Office 2016 and Office 2019 expires. On October 14, 2025, the supply of security updates and technical support for these versions ends. While Office 2019 has no longer received mainstream support since October 2023, Office 2016 has been in the extended support phase since October 2020.

Now Microsoft has about that Microsoft 365 Message Center a warning for companies. Because although the applications will continue to work after the cut -off date, the use of non -supported software carries considerable risks. These include potential security gaps, compliance problems and possible system intolerances. Even if the programs continue to run normally, no more critical security updates are provided.

Microsoft recommends switching

Microsoft points out that in addition to the Office packages, Visio 2016 and 2019, Microsoft Project 2016 and 2019 as well as various other products on October 14, 2025 will reach the end of their support term. Companies should therefore switch to newer versions promptly to ensure security, conformity and optimal performance.

As an alternative, Microsoft recommends switching to Microsoft 365 or Office 365, which offer access to Microsoft 365 apps. “Microsoft 365 apps always provide current versions of well-known applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint for desktop, mobile devices and web with continuous support in accordance with the Modern Lifecycle Policy,” explains Microsoft. In addition, these versions are suitable for use with the Microsoft 365 Copilot-Add-on.

In order to minimize these risks and at the same time maintain access to desktop offices, we recommend an upgrade of the devices to a Microsoft 365 or Office 365 suite that contains the Microsoft 365 apps (for companies or for business customers). Microsoft 365 Message Center

Alternatives for special applications

There are further options for companies that do not want a subscription solution. In October 2024, Office 2024 was published as an independent version for small companies and private users without Microsoft 365 subscription. This version contains Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook for Windows and MacOS systems. Office LTSC (Long Term Servicing Channel) 2024 is available for special applications, such as devices without an internet connection that require long -term support.

This version was released for commercial and official customers in September 2024 and will be supported by October 9, 2029 – four years after the end of the previous versions.
