Microsoft Windows 11 2022 Update Blocked By Xbox Game Bar Capture

Microsoft has confirmed another update block for updating to Windows 11 version 2022. The update will therefore be blocked on systems with Xbox Game Bar Capture. However, the underlying error has already been corrected.

Microsoft is now reporting this in the Windows Release Health Dashboard. It explains that Microsoft is blocking the deployment of the Windows 11 2022 update on some systems due to compatibility issues with the Xbox Game Bar Capture feature.

Microsoft recently added the Compatibility Lock with Protection ID 41584256. This shouldn’t affect many users.

Bug fix available

It is also interesting that the update blockade is still in place, but the bug itself has already been fixed. The issue was addressed with the optional preview update KB5018496 released on October 25. As this is an optional update, it will not be installed automatically. The fix will not be offered automatically via Windows Update until patch day next week (November 8). The update block will then be lifted from mid-November.

Until the fix is ​​rolled out to all Windows users, the Windows team advises affected users not to manually install Windows 11 22H2 on affected devices via the Media Creation Tool or the Update Now button until the protective measure is lifted.

Error Description

Audio may be out of sync when recording video from Xbox Game Bar. The Xbox Game Bar app may experience issues where the audio is out of sync when recording gameplay to a video file. You are more likely to experience this issue if you are using the “Record the last 30 seconds” feature and have “Record in the background while I play” enabled in Xbox Game Bar.

Developer Note: Applications that record or process video files and use the same underlying Windows libraries or APIs as Xbox Game Bar may also be affected by this issue. To protect your upgrade experience, we’ve placed a compatibility lock on devices that previously used the capture feature in the Xbox Game Bar app from being offered or installed for Windows 11, version 22H2. If your organization uses Update Compliance, the Protection ID is 41584256.

Resolution: This issue is resolved in KB5018496. If you have already upgraded to Windows 11, version 22H2, installing KB5018496 will fix this issue.

Note: KB5018496 is not automatically installed. To apply this update, you can check for updates and select the optional preview to download and install. The security ban is expected to be lifted in mid-November 2022. We recommend that you do not update manually using the Update Now button or the media creation tool until this issue is resolved and the protection is removed.
