Microsoft Word Web dark mode is Rolling out to Everyone

Microsoft is currently in the process of releasing Word Dark Mode on the web. According to the roadmap, all users should soon be able to individually change the appearance of Word online from light to dark – depending on how you want it. This is a message from Neowin online magazine. However, anyone who has been following the topic a bit will know that Microsoft is now very late in equipping Word on the web with dark mode.

Aside from the fact that most apps, be they web apps or native applications, have long supported the feature: Microsoft announced three years ago that Microsoft 365 and the Office apps would be getting a dark mode. The Office team had already started the rollout then, but only now in Word on the web for all users.

New for free version users

So far there have been exceptions. The new availability now applies to all accounts using the free version on the web – previously they could only use normal, light mode. That will soon change, however, as Microsoft will make dark mode for Word on the web available to all users. According to the Microsoft 365 roadmap, Microsoft is currently working on introducing dark mode for Word on the web.

The feature was added to the roadmap page a few days ago and is expected to be generally available later this month. The release should be complete in early June and dark mode for the Word web client should be available equally to all users.

However, there is currently no information on how dark mode for the free version is embedded on the web. As a rule, the display is based on the user’s operating system preference and also allows to change the themes manually, regardless of the basic settings.

Microsoft writes in the roadmap:

Dark mode in Word for the web gives documents a modern look while also helping to reduce eye strain and light sensitivity when working long hours in front of a computer screen.

  • Cloud instance(s): Global (Multi-tenant by default)
  • General Availability: May 2022
