Microsoft is bringing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III to Xbox Game Pass. The 2023 shooter will be available to subscribers from July 24. It is the first Call of Duty title in the subscription service since Microsoft acquired Activision. Activision
Microsoft is finally adding the first-person shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III to the Xbox Game Pass. Shortly after 6 p.m. German time, the game subscription’s official X account posted that the title would be included in the catalog starting tomorrow. Modern Warfare III is the first Call of Duty title to be included in the Game Pass since Microsoft took over Activision Blizzard.
For a long time, it was unclear when and if older Call of Duty games would be included in the Game Pass. Now Microsoft has made a start with Modern Warfare III, which will only be released in November 2023. The shooter is the sequel to the 2022 reboot of Modern Warfare II and should not be confused with the 2009 title of the same name.
The addition of Modern Warfare III to Game Pass comes at an interesting time. Microsoft recently announced price increases for its subscription services. From September 12, the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will rise from €14.99 to €17.99 per month.
PC Game Pass will also be more expensive, costing €9.99 per month instead of €11.99. In addition, there will soon be a new “Standard” option for members. This is supposed to be cheaper, but does not offer access to new releases on the day of release. The inclusion of a major title like Modern Warfare III could make the price increases more bearable for many subscribers.
Microsoft has already communicated further plans for the Call of Duty series in the future. The next part of the series, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, will be available in Game Pass immediately upon release. However, only subscribers to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass will have access to the title.
As mentioned above, new members of the cheaper “standard” subscription will have to forego day-one access. It remains to be seen if and when other older Call of Duty titles will be included in Game Pass. Rumors suggest that other Activision games such as the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy could soon land in the subscription service.
The inclusion of Call of Duty in the Game Pass could have an impact on the games market. The series is one of the best-selling video game series worldwide and has a large fan base. Availability in the subscription model could attract new players and make the Game Pass more attractive to many consumers. At the same time, the question arises as to how this step will affect the sales of Call of Duty games.
According to data from the UK, sales of Modern Warfare III in the first three weeks after launch were around 38% lower than those of its predecessor Modern Warfare II. Microsoft may be relying on generating additional revenue through microtransactions and DLCs within the games. What do you think of the inclusion of Modern Warfare III in the Game Pass? Will this influence your decision to subscribe to the service or to stick with it despite the price increase? And which older Call of Duty titles would you like to see in the Game Pass?
