N64 games on Switch 2 with exclusive features

N64 games are not just emulated on Switch 2 – they get better than before. Nintendo provides the classics a backflow function, CRT filter and customizable control. At the same time, the company is expanding its retro offer with Gamecube title like Wind Waker.

New features for N64 classics

With the start of the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, players not only get access to new GameCube titles, but also practical functions for Nintendo 64 games. Nintendo thus expands its retro offer and makes the classics of the 90s more accessible to modern players.

One of the most important innovations is the backflow function, which enables failed jumps or reflex -intensive tasks to repeat at the push of a button. This feature should be particularly welcome in demanding titles such as Super Mario 64 or The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which are known for their sometimes tricky passages.

Retro feeling and flexible control

A new CRT filter ensures real retro ambience that simulates the characteristic scanlines of old tube TVs. This representation also smoothes angular polygons and ensures a more authentic representation of the classics. The N64, which was published for the first time in 1996, was originally developed for tube TV, which is why many games often appear unnatural on modern displays. In the break menu, players can also adjust the control according to their wishes.

Not only can buttons be re -occupied, but also modern controller functions – for example by assigning shortcuts to the ZL button or the directional counter. This is particularly helpful, since the original N64 controller with its thirty design and the central analog stick offered a completely different ergonomics than modern controllers.

Exclusive features for the new console

While the control adjustments will also be available on the original switch, the CRT filters and the back-speed function of the Switch 2 are reserved. The announcement was made via the new Nintendo Today app, which will serve as a central platform for important Nintendo announcements in the future.

For the launch of the Switch 2, three GameCube titles will also be available in the online service: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX and SoulCalibur 2. Other classics such as Super Mario Sunshine, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness and Luigi’s Mansion should follow later.
