Netflix Subscription Problem: Some Devices Are Not Supported

Netflix has launched its long-awaited low-cost basic subscription plan, cross-funded by advertising. However, it now shows that there are many hurdles to using the offer – because not all hardware is compatible.

The streaming provider Netflix has now published an extensive FAQ for the new subscription plan for 4.99 euros per month to answer all questions about the currently supported hardware and software. However, you have to laboriously search for information about the devices that are not supported there.

Because, unlike the regular subscription plans, there are more exceptions to the cheaper streaming offer.

Users who see the error message ” The basic subscription with advertising is not supported ” when trying to start the cheap subscription on their devices should first check whether they receive an update for their operating system or for the application used to be able. If it’s not the software, there are still some devices that are generally not supported. These include, for example, the Apple TV and the PlayStation 3.

Not supported:

  • PlayStation 3
  • All generations of the Apple TV
  • Windows app
  • Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra (Chromecast goes with Google TV)
  • Android older than version 7
  • iOS and iPadOS older than version 15

Netflix also advises that the basic subscription with advertising with third-party billing may not be available with all billing partners and packages. For example, if you have booked Netflix with your mobile phone provider, you should check whether the new advertising model is also supported.

Incidentally, it is not yet known whether these are just initial problems, i.e. whether Netflix will improve them over time, or whether it will stay that way. Netflix has not commented on this.

What is the basic subscription?

In the basic subscription with advertising, the user gets to see up to five minutes of commercials per hour. Resolution is limited to 720p. Some films and series are not available in the new subscription plan for licensing reasons. Offline use is not intended. “Basic Plan with Ads” is currently available in twelve countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Spain will follow from November 10th.
