Microsoft is launching its new Windows app: The application enables remote access to Windows systems from iOS, macOS, Android and web browsers. Users benefit from improved functions and a unified interface for remote desktop services.
Microsoft has announced the general availability of its new Windows app announced. This all-in-one app serves as a central hub that allows users to seamlessly access Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft Dev Box, or their personal Remote Desktop PC.
The application, which has been tested for almost a year, allows users to access Windows systems from various platforms. According to Microsoft, the app is now available for Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and web browsers. An Android version is in public preview mode. Windows app: your access to Windows on any device
The new Windows app serves as a central point of contact for streaming copies of Windows from various sources, including Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Remote Desktop, and other services. Remote Desktop enables graphical remote access to a computer’s desktop. Programs are run on a server but displayed and operated on a client device.
The application offers a number of improvements over previous remote desktop solutions. Users benefit from a customizable home screen, support for multiple monitors and USB redirection. The latter enables the use of local devices such as webcams, storage media and printers as if they were connected directly to the cloud PC.
For IT administrators, the app offers a uniform user interface across all platforms. This simplifies the administration and support of remote access solutions in companies.
Microsoft has also introduced further improvements with general availability:
The Windows app is currently limited to Microsoft work and school accounts. It is primarily aimed at existing users of remote desktop clients for Windows and other operating systems. Support for private accounts is not planned, at least not at this time.
The name of the new app has already sparked discussions before its release. Some critics fear that the term “Windows app” is too general and could make it difficult to find the application. Others see potential difficulties with technical support, especially for less experienced users.
The launch of the new Windows app fits into Microsoft’s long-term strategy to move Windows entirely to the cloud. The goal is to enable improved AI-powered services and complete mobility of users’ digital experience. The new app could be an important step in this direction, even if the focus is initially on enterprise applications.
