Nexus Mods Founder Sells Platform After 24 Years

The largest mod platform in the world, Nexus Mods, is facing a turning point: After 24 years, founder Robin “Dark0ne” has sold the website. The new owners promise continuity, but the gaming community is concerned.

From the niche to the mod empire

Nexus Mods started in 2001 as a small website for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and developed into a dominant force in the modding area for two decades. Today the platform hosts over 716,000 mods for more than 3700 different games and counts more than 63 million registered members.

The platform’s donation point system is worth mentioning, through which $ 12.6 million has already been distributed to Mod authors. The system enables users to support their favorite modder directly and has contributed significantly to the professionalization of the modding scene.

Health burden leads to sale

Scott founded His decision mainly with the enormous burden of the management of the steadily growing platform. After almost a quarter of a century at the head of Nexus Mods, he was looking for a solution that protects both his health and the future of the website.

The choice fell on choses, a Danish company that specializes in growth-oriented gaming projects. Victor Folmann, co -founder of Chosen, has already had experience in the past controversial monetarization models like in-app purchases, NFTS and cryptocurrencies.

New owners promise continuity

Despite Folmann’s controversial past, the new owners of the concerned community assured that no aggressive monetization was planned. Paid mods, NFT integration or similar controversial business models should remain excluded. Instead, they want to rely on transparency and the preservation of the proven structures. The announcement nevertheless met with mixed reactions in the modding community. Many long-term users expressed concerns about possible changes in platform philosophy under new leadership.

Others see the sale an opportunity for technical improvements and extended functions. The story of Nexus Mods shows an example of how the gaming industry has developed in the past two decades. What started as a hobby project for a small modding community became a multi-million dollar scene with a global range. The sale not only marks the end of Scott’s era, but also the beginning of a new chapter for one of the most important platforms in the PC gaming world.
