Nokia Open to New Smartphone Partners After HMD Split

Just because you no longer cooperate with HMD does not mean that there will be no more smartphones with the “Nokia” brand name. A representative of the Finnish network supplier has now clarified this.

Nokia is open to new partners for smartphones

The Human Mobile Devices (HMD) company, founded by previous Nokia employees, was the licensee for the Nokia brand for smartphones and other mobile devices until the end. In the meantime, however, the cooperation has ended and relies on using your own name on your devices. In one Reddit contribution (via Mobilissimo) Nokia has now commented on the subject. The official account of the Nokia Community Manager explained when asked whether Nokia was still open to licens the brand name for use in smartphones. Apparently there are a few prerequisites.

If you want to make mobile devices on a large scale and jointly explore opportunities for a cooperation, you can contact the company via the official Nokia partner channels, the post said at Reddit. Of course, it is unusual for Nokia to signal its willingness for cooperations in this way, but it should be quite pleased with fans of the legendary brand that the company is open to new partners. At the same time, the statement also makes it clear that Nokia has so far not found any new partners who want to licens the brand name for their devices. At the moment, the license deal with HMD is likely to run in a limited form until 2026, although there is no official information.

Nokia had sold its division for mobile devices almost 12 years ago to Microsoft, where after some loveless attempts you decided to give up the business completely. Since then, the Nokia brand has been used by HMD, for example to market the Nokia 9 PureView as the only real Android flagship of the revived brand. This project also failed in the long term due to various problems, which is why it is now questionable whether the name “Nokia” can still have traction when marketing mobile devices.
