Nothing Phone 2 is Coming Soon

The young brand Nothing, which was brought to life by the former co-founder of OnePlus, wants to follow up on the quite remarkable success of its first smartphone towards the end of this year with a second model that should have more of a “premium” claim.

As Carl Pei, who has now also founded Nothing after OnePlus, announced in an interview with Inverse magazine, the launch of the so-called Nothing Phone 2 is planned for the second half of the year. The current Nothing Phone 1 received some attention with its transparent design and eye-catching LED elements on the back and, according to Pei, is still selling well.

Nothing was able to increase sales significantly within a year, also because the Nothing Phone (1) was quite successful. According to Pei, Nothing grossed around $24 million in 2021. In the last year, sales have already increased significantly to a good 200 million dollars, according to the company founder. In addition to smartphones, Nothing mainly sells wireless headphones, which are now available in several versions.

New “premium” smartphone towards the end of 2023 with a focus on software

After Pei and his team did not want to comment specifically on their plans for a second smartphone from their development, he now gave more detailed information for the first time. The launch of the Nothing Phone 2 is planned for the end of 2023 because in the meantime it has grown significantly and thus gained more confidence in its own abilities.

Around 400 employees now work for Nothing, which puts the company in a much better position in terms of hardware development and software, according to Pei. Therefore, with the Nothing Phone (2), the main focus should also be on software and product maintenance, which was previously not possible due to the company’s limited manpower. It simply made little sense to introduce a second smartphone without being able to provide the necessary support.

For Nothing Phone 2 they now want to tackle the USA as a launch market, after all this market could provide around a third more sales. Pei did not want to confirm whether the second Nothing smartphone will be some kind of high-end device. It will be a “premium” smartphone, although he wants to avoid the term “flagship” model because the Nothing Phone 1 was also a “flagship” in the company’s product portfolio.
