Nothing works anymore on the PlayStation Network: services are massively disrupted

The PlayStation Network has been struggling with massive outages since the early afternoon hours of July 24th. Users worldwide are reporting connection issues while Sony works on a solution. The incident brings back memories of the last major PSN outage.

Weekend without online gaming?

For millions of PlayStation users worldwide, the weekend started with massive problems on the PlayStation Network. There have been widespread outages since the early hours of the morning, affecting numerous online services. Online gaming and the PlayStation Store are among those affected. Users are reporting significant connection issues and receiving error code WS-116449-5, which indicates a network issue.

Sony has confirmed the problem. In a statement, the company said:

We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience. Sony

The problems affect all PlayStation platforms, from the PS3 to the PS4 and PS5 to the PS Vita. The browser version of PlayStation Direct is also affected by the outages. Popular multiplayer titles such as Call of Duty and Fortnite are currently unplayable. There is currently no concrete information about the cause or duration of the outage.

Far-reaching effects

On the German website All disturbances At its peak, more than 6,000 fault reports were received. The official PSN status page indicates problems in all areas of the network:

  • Account management: Login and creation of new accounts not possible
  • Games and social networks: Difficulty starting games and multiplayer modes
  • PlayStation Video: Retrieval of video content disrupted
  • PlayStation Store and PlayStation Direct: Purchases and transactions not possible
  • Memories of past failures are awakened

For many long-time PlayStation users, the outage brings back memories of the major PSN hack in 2011. At that time, the network was offline for 23 days. The network was last offline for longer worldwide in February 2025. While Sony is working on a solution, many players are looking for alternatives. Some users report that they are switching to other platforms such as PC or Xbox. Others use the opportunity to play offline-capable titles or tackle their collection of unplayed games.
