OpenAI launches store for extensions

ChatGPT has so far mostly been a source of information, but the new App Directory turns the bot into an active agent. Users now control services such as Gmail or Photoshop directly via the chat. The AI ​​completes tasks autonomously instead of just delivering texts.

Central platform for extensions launched

On Wednesday evening, OpenAI took a strategically important step to expand its AI chatbot and officially released the “App Directory”. The update standardizes the system’s previous interfaces: functions that were previously known to users under the name “Connectors” are now summarized under the term “Apps”. The developers’ stated goal is to seamlessly integrate external services directly into the chat interface so as not to interrupt the user’s workflow with constant window changes. Anyone logged in in the browser or on mobile devices can search applications ranging from essential productivity tools to lifestyle services via a central directory.

The technical innovation allows ChatGPT to do much more than just retrieve static information. The system is increasingly evolving towards autonomous agents that can communicate interactively with third-party software. This means that data from Google Drive can not only be read out, but can also be analyzed directly, or graphics can be created using Canva without any detours. This represents a significant evolution from previous “plugins,” which often worked in isolation. Thanks to deeper networking, the AI ​​can now carry out context-related actions, such as directly editing a file, while the user remains in the dialogue.

Integration of well-known services and sources

The range of applications available at launch is considerable and covers both private and professional scenarios. OpenAI emphasizes in a recent Blog post that existing connections are not affected by the renaming and that the migration takes place in the background. The company also emphasizes that the new architecture is based on the “Model Context Protocol” (MCP), an open standard that standardizes communication between AI models and data sources. This makes it much easier for partners to securely connect their services to the chatbot.

One of the most prominent new additions to the portfolio is Apple Music. Subscribers can now manage the media library directly via the chatbot, create playlists or have specific songs played without switching apps. Spotify is also expanding its availability to new markets such as Switzerland and the EU. The deeper integration of services such as Gmail and Photoshop is particularly relevant for everyday work.

Control via the @ symbol

To use an app, a mention with the “@” symbol in the prompt is often enough, similar to what we know from collaboration tools such as Slack or Discord. The system recognizes the context and – after one-time authorization via OAuth – accesses the corresponding data. In addition to pure search functions, there are now also apps for complex analyses. For IT professionals and administrators in companies, the update offers granular control options to minimize security risks. Although apps are activated by default in business plans, they remain initially deactivated in enterprise and edu environments for security reasons.

Admins can use the workspace settings to specify exactly which applications are available to employees and whether data can be synchronized. This is crucial for compliance policies in larger companies.
