OpenAI releases Windows app: ChatGPT also for free users

OpenAI brings ChatGPT to the Windows desktop: The free app is now available to all users and offers quick access to the AI assistant. A highlight is the voice control for hands-free work with artificial intelligence.

Quick access to AI support

Windows users can rejoice: OpenAI has now released its ChatGPT desktop app for the Microsoft operating system to all users. The application, which was initially only available to paying customers, can now also be used with a free account.

It promises significantly faster and more convenient access to the popular AI chatbot. The app can be easily downloaded from the Microsoft Store and installed on Windows 10 and 11. A special feature is the Alt + Space key combination, which gives you quick access to ChatGPT.

Voice control as a highlight

How heise reports one of the outstanding features of the Windows app is the so-called Advanced Voice Mode. This makes it possible to communicate with ChatGPT via voice input. The feature promises a natural, conversation-like interaction with artificial intelligence and could prove to be a real productivity booster. Particularly practical: Users can also receive hands-free answers while they work on other tasks. In addition to voice control, the app offers other useful functions:

  • Direct web search from the application
  • Ability to upload files
  • Searchable chat history to easily find previous conversations

Differences from the Mac version

The Windows version of ChatGPT is now available to everyone, but it doesn’t come without differences from the Mac version. The macOS app recently received an update that allows connections to various coding apps – Windows users currently have to do without this feature.

Keyword data protection

An important aspect when using AI assistants is data protection. OpenAI emphasizes that users are always in control of what ChatGPT “sees.” Functions that access the screen content must be explicitly activated. This is particularly relevant with regard to future AI agents, which may be even more deeply integrated into system functions.
