OpenAI’s Bold Bet: $500M Deal to Bring Jony Ive’s Vision for Screenless AI to Life

The rumor mill around a cooperation between the AI developer Openai and the former Apple design manager Jony Ive has been sizzling for over a year. Now new details have come to light that concretize speculation about a hardware project.

IVE startup is probably bought

Like the US magazine The information reports, Openaai plans the takeover of startups founded by Jony Ive and Openai boss Sam Altman. The deal is said to have a volume of around $ 500 million. The company, which operates under the name IO Products, is said to work on a series of innovative AI products – including smart devices for home use.

A product concept is particularly stimulated that should clearly stand out from common devices: a AI-based device without a screen that was initially traded as “AI Phone”. However, according to sources that are familiar with the project, it may not be a classic phone. Rather, the team apparently tries to open up new forms of interaction with artificial intelligence – beyond the usual smartphone surfaces.

This is reminiscent of Humanes Ai Pin – an also on a screen -free AI device, which, however, never made the breakthrough and was ultimately taken over by HP. It remains to be seen whether Jony Ive and his team will find a more convincing approach. In any case, former Apple employees such as Tang Tang and Evans Hankey are also on board, which speaks for high design claims.

It remains mysterious

According to the report, Openai is examining various options: In addition to a complete takeover, there is also a strategic partnership in the room where Openaai would deliver software and technical support, while the design team around IVE remains responsible for the hardware.

The idea of a AI device without a screen sounds visionary, but presents developers with the challenge of clearly standing out from existing voice assistants such as Chatgpt or Siri. Whether IO Products creates this step could be trend-setting for the future of AI interaction.
