Operator of Yubin Archive, Korea’s Biggest Pirated Education Library, Arrested

The Yubin Archive started some time ago to “eliminate educational inequality”. However, you used not quite legal methods. Now the operator of the Telegram Canal was arrested.

Rapid growth

The platform only started in July 2023 and had developed into one of the largest unofficial libraries in digital space in a short time, the magazine reported Torrent freak. The channel offered free access to digital copies of school and specialist books, workbooks, video lectures and examination materials. Pupils and students in particular resorted to the offer. As early as 2024, Yubin Archives counted around 140,000 members, a few months later it was more than 330,000. For many, the service was considered a rescue in an education system in which learning materials are not only mandatory, but also expensive. Media reported shorter queues on copy devices and a noticeable relief.

But while users celebrated the initiative, the printed on the part of the publishers and the government grew. As early as 2023, publishers had submitted complaints and pointed out that even new books were digitally circulated within weeks. A representative of the Korea Copyright Commission warned early on that mass -like copying and distributing copyrights violated – but admitted that individual users could hardly be legally prosecuted.

Economic interests

The authorities therefore focused on the organizers. The Ministry of Culture and Sports now confirmed the arrest of the main operator, which was made a few days ago. Living spaces were searched and evidence was secured with the help of digital forensics. In addition, investigations against possible colleagues are underway.

The investigators emphasize that the operator was not a selfless “Robin Hood”. In addition to the freely accessible archive, it also operated a paid “Minority Channel”, through which exclusive materials were offered for payment. For the authorities, this is a clear indication that economic interests were involved.
