Optional Windows 11 update fixes annoying installation bug

Windows update with a stumbling block: The May update for Windows 11 failed for some users with error code 0x800f0922 – triggered by an inconspicuous memory problem in the system. The bug has now been fixed, but not automatically.

If the update fails

A faulty Windows update, a cryptic code and suddenly nothing works: In May, the security update for Windows 11 caused unexpected problems for some users. Versions 24H2 and 25H2 were affected. Specifically, it was about the update KB5089549, which was rolled out in mid-May. However, on certain devices the installation aborted during the restart – usually about a third of the way through. Instead of a successful completion, Windows reported: “Something went wrong, changes will be undone.” The whole thing was accompanied by error code 0x800f0922.

Microsoft reacted comparatively quickly. The problem was defused on the server side using the so-called “Known Issue Rollback” (KIR), so that at least you weren’t caught in a restart loop. In managed IT environments, administrators were also able to roll out the correction specifically via group policies. However, the prerequisite was that the relevant policy packages had been installed and activated.

Error (source) now fixed

Microsoft has now officially fixed the problem. With the optional update KB5089573, which was released a few days ago, the error was permanently corrected and the fix was subsequently included in the release information. Anyone who installs this or a newer update no longer has to use workarounds. However, this is an optional update, which means that only users who also receive the optional updates via Windows Update will now receive the solution. Otherwise, Microsoft will start automatic distribution with the June patch, i.e. the next major security update.
