Own chatbot exposes X-CEO as a source of fake news

Elon Musk originally described his AI chatbot Grok as “anti-woke” and “maximally truth-seeking.” But the very bot he praised is now accusing his own boss of being a central spreader of false information.

Own chatbot blames Musk

When a user asked whether Elon Musk had spread misinformation to billions of people, the AI chatbot Grok on spread topics […].” As part of the Entertainment Grok provides extensive examples of Musk posting misleading or false content, particularly in the lead-up to the 2024 US presidential election.

The misinformation shared by Musk included doctored videos and already debunked claims about the election process. Grok emphasized that Musk’s enormous reach has significantly increased the influence of this disinformation.

Grok praised by Musk

Musk has repeatedly touted his company’s chatbot in the past. In contrast to alternatives like ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot, Grok is explicitly programmed not to be politically correct, but to tell the truth. Given that the AI describes Musk as a spreader of misinformation, these statements now seem particularly explosive. And not only Musk, but also X as a platform is heavily criticized for its own chatbot.

The mechanism for flagging false information on the platform would not be very effective. In the case of Musk’s tweets, “some of the misinformation was not adequately addressed by this system, either due to its limitations or the rapid dissemination of the information before corrections could be made.” This contributed to the spread of disinformation and impaired trust in democratic processes, such as elections.

AI with errors

However, it should not go unmentioned that Grok himself does not always tell the truth. The chatbot also reportedly spread false information about the election, forcing X to intervene. In the past, the AI had also spread bizarre false reports, such as the one about a basketball player who allegedly rioted and threw stones through downtown Sacramento after a defeat.
