Phil Spencer Confirms Call of Duty will remain on PlayStation

Microsoft has literally shaken the industry this week with its purchase of Activision Blizzard. This also involves Sony and PlayStation players. Microsoft’s gaming head Phil Spencer has now reassured that Call of Duty will remain “on the PlayStation”. Microsoft paid nearly $69 billion for Activision Blizzard and of course, you don’t do that to continue as before. So it is clear: many titles from the (future) publisher will become exclusive games from Microsoft or Xbox/PC. However, many are wondering what will happen to Activision’s most important game, which is Call of Duty.

Microsoft confirms but Sony warns

In addition, Sony warned yesterday that it is expected that the Redmond company will stick to existing agreements and continue to deliver the shooter on the PlayStation. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has now also spoken out and reassured Sony executives and PlayStation owners, at least for now. Because Spencer Writes on Twitter: “Had good calls this week with leaders at Sony. I confirmed our intent to honor all existing agreements upon acquisition of Activision Blizzard and our desire to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation. Sony is an important part of our industry, and we value our relationship.“

That may sound like good news to many, but the wording also leaves room for interpretation. Because on the one hand, it may of course be the case that you leave current or future Call of Duty titles permanently on Sony consoles. On the other hand, the statements of Microsoft’s top gamer can also be interpreted as meaning that existing contracts are only fulfilled, no more and no less. It’s even conceivable that PlayStation players will only get free-to-play titles like Warzone in the future. Here too, only the future will provide clarity.
